Building B2B SaaS engineering teams that actually ship.

I'm a CTO with a decade-plus building B2B SaaS — engineering teams, AI products, distributed squads, and the security and compliance foundations that enterprise buyers actually require.

Four ways in. No retainers you can't escape.

I keep engagements simple on purpose. No discovery-call sales dance, a 30-minute intro call will tell us both whether there's a fit.

What that's actually looked like.

Over a decade building B2B SaaS engineering teams from scratch. Here's the most recent.

MEDDICC
CTO · 2023–2026

Joined as the first technical hire, Head of Engineering, promoted to Head of Technology, then CTO. Built the engineering organisation from 1 to 12+ engineers, introduced Scrum and Lean Startup delivery principles, and established the engineering foundations the company didn't have when I arrived.

Stayed hands-on throughout as a player-coach — contributing across backend, frontend, and infrastructure while running the org. Shipped two significant product pieces: a custom LMS with secure DRM content delivery at the core of the mOS platform, and Winni, MEDDICC's AI sales coaching assistant, where I led model evaluation across Anthropic, OpenAI, and Gemini and the architecture for AI analysis of sales calls to surface coaching insights at scale.

Led the company through ISO 27001 certification with zero non-conformities, owning the ISMS, vendor management, and change control end-to-end. It unblocked enterprise deals that wouldn't have closed without it.

What we shipped

Earlier
2010s · Engineering leadership

Before MEDDICC: CTO at Clarity Stack, a VC-backed B2B SaaS where I built the engineering, product, and design function from scratch, ran the technical side of a £1.67M seed raise from Fuel Ventures, and shipped production ML pipelines for sales intent detection before LLMs made that the obvious answer to everything. Before that, Head of Technology at Really Social — where I built a remote engineering team in the Philippines that's still running today, years after I left. And before that, co-founder of two software agencies (Riselabs, Systematic Apps), building mobile and web products for clients including Compare the Market and ADP. Same pattern every time: first technical hire, build from nothing, make it last.

CEO at MEDDICC · managed Scott directly

"Scott is one of the most impactful hires I've made.

When Scott joined, our platform was being built by an external agency. Development was slow and expensive. Scott brought the whole thing in-house and built an engineering and product team from scratch to run it. Everything we have today in engineering, product, and design exists because Scott built it.

His team shipped our LMS from the ground up, reaching feature parity with Thinkific, a platform with over 100 engineers and a five-year head start. Scott did it with under 10% of the resources, in 10% of the time. He also led us through ISO certification, which he'd tell you was the highlight (Narrator: It was not the highlight, Scott doesn't enjoy ISO, but he nailed it all the same).

Aside from everything I've already mentioned, Scott should be most proud of the culture he built in his team/s. They spanned oceans and time zones, and the standard he set inside it is something I've rarely seen at any company, at any size.

Hard working. Dependable. Always reachable. Always on it. And genuinely one of the best humans I've worked alongside.

Whoever gets Scott next is lucky. Hire him.

My only regret is not finding Scott earlier."

Managing Director · Really Social

"Scott built out and ran our remote engineering team in the Philippines back in 2019 and it was one of the smartest moves we made at that stage. He hired well, set the team up properly, and the day-to-day operation was genuinely smooth, none of the friction you often get with offshore setups.

The team he put in place is still part of how we operate today with the head of the team still managing it to this day.

The platform he built has held up just as well. It's evolved a lot since but the foundations are still there and still serving the business years on. He made the right calls early on when it would have been easy to cut corners, and we've been benefiting from that ever since.

Easy to work with, technically sharp, and someone who clearly thinks beyond the immediate build."

"Scott was our first technical hire and ended up running the whole engineering, product, and design function. He's a real problem solver, gets things done and brings his own thinking rather than waiting to be told what to do. He held his own through our seed raise and built the team that took us from outsourced agency to in-house. The kind of person you want around when you're moving fast and decisions matter."

Interim CTO at MEDDICC · Scott's successor

"My predecessor Scott certainly left behind some very big shoes to fill! His tenure at MEDDICC yielded: a remote engineering team with the most amazing culture I have ever seen in my career (no easy feat given everyone worked remotely halfway around the world), a full ISO 27001 compliance certification (including all documented processes), and overall a very robust and stable Cloud SaaS platform that included both an LMS and a customer enablement platform, and even a versatile agentic AI system on top! Overall an amazing effort and legacy; he has had a profound impact as a leader and will be sorely missed!"

Product Designer at Clarity Stack · reported to Scott

"I had the pleasure of working closely with Scott during his time as CTO at Clarity Stack, and I can confidently say he was one of the most supportive and inspiring leaders I've worked with.

He built the technical team from the ground up, creating a highly skilled and collaborative environment through his incredibly hands-on approach. From establishing teams across both the UK and the Philippines to ensuring time zones never became a barrier, he created a seamless and well-functioning global team culture where everyone felt connected and valued.

What stood out most was his commitment to people. He consistently encouraged me and the wider team to grow, develop new skills, and build confidence in our abilities. He always made time to listen to every area of the business and generously shared his expertise and insight to help both individuals and the company succeed.

Beyond his technical knowledge and leadership, he is genuinely one of the kindest people I've had the pleasure to work with. Any team would be lucky to have him leading the way."

Because shipping beats advising.

The fastest way to know if a fractional CTO has rust on their hands is to see what they're shipping themselves.

A bit about me.

Scott Roberts

I'm Scott Roberts. I've spent the last decade-plus building B2B SaaS engineering teams, most recently as CTO at MEDDICC, where I built and led the engineering org from zero to one.

I'm a realist who defaults to yes. I'll back the plan, challenge the assumptions, and hand you the trade-offs before you find out the hard way. The founders I work best with want someone who'll tell them what they need to hear, not just what they want to.

I'm based in Tandragee, Northern Ireland. When I'm not working I'm playing golf badly, cooking optimistically, or knocking down walls in my house.
